At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
