Space Traveler Discloses Depression Following Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the flight, including increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
