The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
